Joan Woodbury in The Eagle's Brood (1935)

In 1935, actress Joan Woodbury co-starred in a film called The Eagle's Brood.
Joan Woodbury, a Los Angeles native, had entered the movie business in 1934 and accumulated a bunch of uncredited resumé entries before quickly moving on to more prominent work. The Eagle's Brood provided Woodbury with her first substantial exposure in Hollywood and the talented actress shines brightly in her featured role as Hispanic saloon dancer Dolores. However, for this project Joan Woodbury was not billed under her own name...instead she is listed in the credits as Nana Martinez.
The Eagle's Brood is a traditional Western and the second entry in the expansive Hopalong Cassidy motion picture series. Joan Woodbury plays a kind woman who attempts to assist an orphaned boy (who happens to be the grandson of a notorious outlaw named El Toro). This eventually brings her into contact with the heroic Hopalong Cassidy (played by William Boyd) who is also trying to help the child.
Joan Woodbury does a great job here. She certainly makes the most of her limited time on screen and her presence adds an extra layer of enjoyment to this exciting 'B' Western outing. Woodbury, of course, would go on to appear in numerous Westerns over the years but it was here that she first showcased her lasting appeal in that venerable film genre.
